The Skills Initiative for Africa (SIFA) has released its newsletter “Navigating the Crisis” which reflects on macro-economic trends and the pandemic’s implication for skills development.

SIFA seeks to improve the employment prospects of African Youth through showcasing best practices, facilitating expert dialogue to find pragmatic solutions for accompanying ongoing TVET reforms. SIFA also aims to strengthen public-private sector partnerships at a national and regional level, to drive demand-oriented skills delivery in TVET institutions.

Gender Transformative Change in Practice

The Agricultural Technical Vocational Education and Training for Women (ATVET4W) project, which is implemented in six countries in Africa – Benin, Burkina Faso, Ghana, Kenya, Malawi and Togo – aims not only to increase women’s access to skills development offers, but also to benefit and empower women. To achieve this, gender-transformative pilot initiatives have been set up in all six countries. Being gender-transformative means that interventions focus on actively questioning established norms and gender stereotypes and on dismantling existing structural inequalities.

This Policy Brief gives a high-level summary of the entry points for public-private partnerships, highlight challenges for private sector engagement and shares tools for sustainability.

The ATVET Project, from its initial implementation, recognized the key role of the private sector and made the effort to engage its support for the Project implementation. The Project’s appraisal studies in all countries identified the potential roles of the private sector and other relevant value chain/commodity association players in each country’s specific socio-economic situation.

The document provides 8 tried and tested guiding principles to steer mentorship programmes for women in agriculture.

As part of their interventions, the Agricultural Technical Vocational Education and Training for Women (ATVET4W) project developed and implemented a mentorship programme in Burkina Faso and Kenya, for urban and rural women in agriculture.
