Program: Master of Logistics Engineering and Management

The scholarship provided financial relief, which made it feasible to access to acquire high-quality education in China. The studies equipped me with technical expertise and practical problem-solving skills in logistics. I will use the skills acquired to drive innovation and sustainability in maritime logistics, optimizing supply chains and managing complex global operations to contribute to organizational growth.

My experience with Chinese culture offered me a deeper understanding of both personal and professional aspects of Chinese society. The cultural insights I gained enriched my academic experience and shaped my perspective on global business practices, communication, and teamwork.

However, I faced some challenges while studying online from Tanzania, including network connectivity issues, time zone differences, language barriers, and cultural differences which affected my understanding of academic expectations.

Overall, the scholarship validated my career aspirations. It allowed me to focus more on my studies and opened opportunities for networking and mentorship, reinforcing my commitment to making a meaningful impact in the field of logistics engineering.

For future applicants, I encourage them to carefully align their applications with the scholarship’s objectives, which focus on developing technical and vocational skills that address regional and national development needs.

Ms. Meron Debrework

Program: Master of Science in Fashion Design

University: Dalian Polytechnic University, China

Through the EASTRIP-China TVET Scholarship Program, I developed critical thinking, research skills, communication abilities, and technical proficiency, all of which I aim to apply in my field as a fashion designer. These skills will enable me to tackle design challenges innovatively and effectively.

I experienced many aspects of Chinese culture, including the complexities of the Mandarin language, traditional festivals like the Chinese New Year, and rich artistic expressions such as calligraphy and opera. This cultural immersion deepened my appreciation for diversity and adaptability of the Chinese culture.

Balancing coursework, assignments, and extracurricular activities while adapting to a new educational environment was quite challenging. I also learnt how to adjusting to unfamiliar food and cultural norms which required patience and flexibility.

The scholarship removed the financial burden of my studies and allowed me to focus on developing my passion for fashion design. It inspired me to pursue my goals with confidence and ambition, aiming to make a positive impact in the fashion industry in Ethiopia and the East African region.

I advise future applicants to start their scholarship search and application process early to ensure you have ample time for preparation. Being proactive and dedicated will greatly enhance their chances of success.

Mr. Caxton Griffith Kibebe

Program: Master of Engineering in Materials Science and Engineering (Specializing in Renewable and Clean Energy)

University: Liaoning Technical University, China

RFTI: Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology

The EASTRIP-China TVET Scholarship Program gave me with an opportunity to advance my qualifications and immerse myself in global perspectives on technical and vocational education. I acquired both technical and soft skills that are integral to my career.

I gained expertise in advanced materials research, energy storage systems, and the application of nanotechnology in renewable energy. I plan to use these skills to develop curricula relevant to industry needs, mentor students, and contribute to research initiatives that address Kenya’s energy challenges and the East African region.

My time in China was not just about academics; it was a rich cultural odyssey that profoundly impacted my worldview. I navigated language barriers, explored diverse culinary experiences, and engaged with classmates from various backgrounds, which enriched my understanding of cultural diversity.

Studying online while working full-time required exceptional time management skills, while adapting to the Chinese educational system and the language barrier presented significant challenges, which I overcame through determination and resourcefulness.

The scholarship has enabled me to position myself as a specialist in renewable energy and inspired me to leverage my expertise to influence policy and drive innovation while mentoring the next generation of engineers.

My advice for future applicants is to embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, take the time to familiarize themselves with the host country’s culture, and maintain a positive attitude throughout their journey. This scholarship can be a life-changing experience that equips them with skills and perspectives to make a meaningful impact.

Eng. Stephen Ogola Oduor

Program: Masters in Civil Engineering (Geotechnical Engineering)

University: Tianjin University, China

RFI: Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology

My special appreciation goes to the Kenya Institute of Highways and Building Technology and the Inter-University Council for East Africa (IUCEA) in collaboration with the China Scholarship Council (CSC) for this well-coordinated scholarship that has shaped my career as a professional and a scholar with a global perspective.

I acquired advanced engineering principles, geotechnical software proficiency, and enhanced skills in conducting detailed and systematic research. These abilities will enable me to apply innovative thinking and practical applications in civil engineering, mentoring others while reinforcing theoretical knowledge through hands-on experience.

The exposure to Chinese academic culture contributed to my professional growth and broadened my career aspirations. I had the opportunity to explore various aspects of Chinese society and engage with my peers from different cultural backgrounds.

However, I faced several challenges adapting to virtual training during the COVID-19 pandemic, requiring me to adjust my learning strategies to fit a new online environment while managing my academic requirements effectively.

Program: MBA in Shipping Economics

University: Dalian Maritime University, China

RFTI: Kenya Coast National Polytechnic College

The EASTRIP-China TVET Scholarship Programme was excellent. It gave me invaluable opportunity for collaboration and connections with one of the highly-ranked maritime institutions in China and the World. This enhanced my educational experience and my ability to conduct quality training in maritime programs.

I developed strong research and analytical skills in the area of shipping economics and management. I am currently applying these skills in teaching and research for my students and I am looking forward to reviewing our institution’s curriculum to incorporate modern trends in the industry.

My experience with Chinese culture was inclusive, allowing me to engage with diverse traditions and practices.

One of the challenges I faced was the language barrier, which made communication difficult at times, but I gradually learned to navigate it.
