The Secretariat of the Pan-African Initiative for the Digital Transformation of TVET and Skills Development Systems in Africa[1], represented by IFEF and UNESCO, has been invited by GIZ and the African Union (AU), through the “Skills Initiative For Africa (SIFA)” programme, to take part in the International Conference of the Association of Technical Universities and Polytechnics in Africa (ATUPA) in Accra (Ghana), from 28 August to 02 September 2023[2], to present the activities and share the outcomes of the Initiative.

ATUPA is driven by global trends in Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) and their contributions to the implementation of Africa’s Transformation Agenda (AU Agenda 2063). The skills revolution and the production of excellent infrastructures, as well as knowledge sharing will strengthen the continent’s vision of the transformation of an active and self-sufficient youth population, skills-based industrialization, inclusive economic growth and ever-changing income streams. In 2021, Senegal was the first French-speaking country to join ATUPA. ATUPA is opened to other language zones and hopes that other countries will follow the example of Senegal.

The Pan-African Initiative for the Digital Transformation of TVET and Skills Development Systems in Africa was officially launched on 09 March 2021. The initiative aims to equip African countries with resilient TVET and skills development systems that are better aligned with technological advances and the labour market, by putting in place in one African country out of two, by 2030, an ecosystem conducive to the digital transformation of TVET and skills development systems. To date, 20 African countries have signed up to the Initiative, and two of these countries have been invited to the ATUPA annual Conference to share their experiences: Guinea and Rwanda.

GIZ and the AU, partners of the Initiative, have kindly invited the Secretariat of the Initiative and two beneficiary countries to this 2023 Annual Conference of ATUPA, in order to disseminate the Initiative’s achievements. The Secretariat and representatives of the two beneficiary countries took part in the following panel: Strengthening economic resilience through digitalisation and intra-regional TVET ecosystems by presenting the Initiative’s model.
