Holeta Polytechnic seeks to address the skills gap in Ethiopia with Labour Market Needs Assessment

Holeta Polytechnic College in Ethiopia conducted a Labour Market Needs Assessment study for the academic year 2023/24 to analyse the requirements of the labour market.

The purpose of the labour market assessments was to identify the constraints that affect labour market outcomes. It provided insights into the labour market needs in Ethiopia and demonstrated that TVET can create competent and self-reliant citizens who can contribute to the socio-economic development of the country.

The assessment was conducted by examining the market demand for products and services, identifying growth sectors that are expected to generate jobs in the near future, and studying the industry structure and value chain relationships within these sectors to gain insights into the type and quantity of employment opportunities.

The findings of the study indicate that the agricultural sector accounts for 24.5% of the total labour demand market, followed by the economic infrastructure sector at 14.9%, the industry development sector at 13.5%, trade and business at 8.6%, the sport, culture, and tourism sector at 34.9%, the health sector at 1.6%, the mining and extractions sector at 1.9%, and finally, the labour and social affairs sector at 0.22%.

The study is an important step towards addressing the skill gaps to ensure the availability of a competent workforce that can contribute to the country’s socio-economic development.
